After their children moved out, marking the end of an era, local couple Jessica and Roger Sanchez faced a new chapter in their lives. Rather than letting the empty nest syndrome take hold, they enrolled in Goodwill San Antonio’s Digital Literacy Course.

“I was a new empty nester, and was applying for part-time jobs,” said Jessica, who landed a position at a recycling center. “When I got hired, I was lost. I realized that I didn’t have enough computer skills to do the job.”

After attending a Goodwill Job Fair, Jessica and Roger discovered Goodwill San Antonio’s Digital Literacy Course. A free course covering topics from basic computer operations and email usage to more advanced subjects like online security. Having had little exposure to technology beyond basic use, the couple enrolled in the course. They were both excited and nervous about this new chapter in their lives.

“We were a bit nervous at first,” said Roger, who works in tourism. “But the instructor, Ms. Eva, was incredible. You never felt like no question was too silly or out our bounce.”

After recently graduating from the course, Jessica and Roger now regularly use their newfound digital skills to keep in touch with their children and explore new job opportunities.

“I loved this class, and I always advocate and tell people about it,” said Jessica. “I’m always trying to improve myself and I’m so glad that I decided to try something new and enroll.”
