Jose’s story is one of resilience, faith, and the power of second chances. Today, he stands as a proud graduate of Goodwill’s Good Careers Academy, but his path to success was paved with profound struggles and relentless determination.

During his twenties, Jose found himself in a dark period of his life. Having previously pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of the Incarnate Word, his studies were abruptly interrupted by a series of personal challenges. A recent divorce, the responsibilities of paying child support, three children in private school, and aging parents with increasing needs forced him to give up his car and take a full-time job at a restaurant, putting his educational aspirations on hold.

By the end of 2019, after years of career changes, Jose was working for the San Antonio Spurs, in the process of earning a position in management. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded his difficulties. Jose sensed the impending shutdown and chose to leave his job to shelter in place as the world around him came to a halt. For years, he lived in isolation, grappling with loneliness, depression, and the erosion of his identity. He completely ran out of money and found himself disconnected from his family and other people.

In the midst of these challenges, Jose's faith journey began anew. Reengaging with his spirituality, he was ready to rebuild his life and sought to align his work with his values. One fateful day in 2023, Jose rode his bicycle to a Goodwill Good Careers Center to seek resources and search for jobs. There, he stumbled upon a sign for the Goodwill Good Careers Academy. With an almost serendipitous urgency, he applied to the Medical Assistant program right then and there, completing the application process within minutes on his phone. The staff at the Good Careers Academy quickly contacted him and helped him enroll in classes.

The program, which ran Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for nine months, was rigorous. Despite being an older, unconventional student surrounded by younger classmates, Jose embraced the challenge. He loved learning and found support and encouragement from dedicated instructors, like Mrs. Rojas. Jose thrived in the structured environment and discovered a renewed sense of purpose and community.

Through the academy’s network of community partners, Jose was able to secure an externship at the Diabetes and Glandular Disease Clinic. This opportunity was a turning point for Jose’s life. He approached it with the seriousness of a job interview, showing up in a suit and tie, ready to make a lasting impression. The practical experience he gained was invaluable, and his dedication quickly earned him a job offer. He feels fortunate and blessed to work with remarkable leaders and colleagues who continue to guide him and cheer him on.

Today, Jose is not only a successful clinical medical assistant, but also an inspiration for others. His journey through addiction, depression, and immense personal loss has shaped him into a compassionate professional who deeply values his work. He is also an active member of Last Chance Ministries, where he ministers, plays guitar on the worship team, and shares his testimony with others facing similar struggles.

At 50 years old, Jose feels like he is just beginning to blossom. His journey with Goodwill’s Good Careers Academy has given him a solid foundation to build on, and he looks forward to continuing to grow, learn, and serve. He smiles as he looks back and notes that everything turned around for him. From riding a bike to job searches to becoming a respected healthcare professional, Jose achieved transformation and fulfillment with the resources and training he received from Goodwill San Antonio.
