From Rock Bottom to Redemption: How Matthew Rodriguez Transformed His Life

After retiring from the oil field, all Matthew Rodriguez, 53, could think about was the situation he was facing. He was bored at home battling alcoholism, a disease that gradually took over his life, leading to the loss of his family and his sense of self-worth.

“I was at a point in my life where I lost everything,” said Matthew. “My marriage was falling apart, and I ran out of spots to go and that’s when I landed homeless and at Haven for Hope.”

Fast forward three years later and Matthew is now on the verge of a remarkable achievement. He is set to graduate from the Good Careers Academy at Goodwill San Antonio with a Commercial Driver’s License, marking a new chapter in his life.

“I was at a bad time in my life, and I didn’t know if I wanted to be around,” recalled Matthew. “But my little grandson changed that. He made me realize that there's more to come- gave me a will to live.”

It was while at Haven for Hope that Matthew was introduced to the Good Careers Academy, a school offering free training programs to the community. Focused on obtaining his CDL, he immersed himself in the program, attending classes and practical training. With the encouragement of his instructors, he was now more determined than ever to begin a new chapter in his life.

“My instructor, Mr. Andy was so great. He was so patient with me, working with me, and not giving up on me. I cannot thank him enough,” said Matthew.

Today Matthew carries with him the lessons he’s learned and the strength he’s gained from his journey. As he prepares to graduate, he’s rediscovered a new purpose in life thanks in part to Goodwill San Antonio.

“My kids are very proud and happy for me, they didn’t like seeing me the way I was last year,” said Matthew. "I have a future now, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.”
